Chicago, Illinois, 2014, Commercial
Situated in a dense mixed-use urban environment along Milwaukee Avenue in Chicago, a folding storefront invites pedestrians into the gallery and retail space of brick, wood, and reclaimed tin. A glass wall pierces the thick back wall of Chicago common brick to an outdoor garden. We set out to create within a tough urban environment places for rest and places for the human soul to flourish. To this, we employ concepts of expansion and compression, unexpected encounters with nature, scale, distance, daylight, and materiality to create powerful poly-sensory experiences for the viewing, participation, and creation of art.
